Morphological Theory: An Introduction to Word Structure in Generative Grammar (Blackwell Textbooks in Linguistics)

Morphological Theory: An Introduction to Word Structure in Generative Grammar (Blackwell Textbooks in Linguistics)

This is the first near-exhaustive introduction to the burgeoning field of morphology in generative grammar. Presupposing very little prior knowledge of linguistics, the book guides the reader from absolute basics to the most recent theoretical developments. Written in an accessible style, and including a wealth of exercises, this textbook is designed so that it can be used either on courses explicitly focused on morphology or as an adjunct to other courses, particularly in generative syntax and in phonology. The book opens with an account of the phenomena studied by morphologists, an outline of classical problems and an introduction to the earliest models of morphology proposed within the generative paradigm. Its second part deals with the interface between morphology and phonology and includes a detailed discussion of lexical Phonology, and related models, as well as a variety of types of nonconcatenative morphology. Part III begins with a comprehensive introduction to more recent theories of word structure, including inflectional morphology. Subsequent chapters examine the interface between morphology and syntax, exploring the processes which affect grammatical relations, such as passives and causatives. Further chapters examine compounding processes and the morphology, phonology and syntax of clitic systems. The final part of the book includes a full discussion of "bracketing paradoxes" and closes with a survey of models of morphology and competing views of the place of morphology in linguistic theory.

The Textbook of Yoga Psychology

The Textbook of Yoga Psychology

The Textbook of Yoga Psychology, written by noted Sanskrit scholar and yogi Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D., combines his definitive translation with an inspiring interpretation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Patanjali's ancient formulae for self-analysis make this text crucial to the proper understanding of the philosophy, psychology and practice of Yoga. An extensive Introduction provides a lucid and thorough examination of the Sankhya Yoga Philosophy from which the Yoga Sutras emerged. The accessibility of Dr. Mishra's translation of the Yoga Sutras has made this the favorite among beginning Yoga students, while experienced yogis and novices both appreciate the clarity of his commentaries on each sutra. Dr. Mishra's interpretation is unique in placing this ancient work in a modern context, examining Yoga psychology in the light of recent advances in psychiatry, psychology and parapsychology. Increasing its value as a reference, this edition features a new Appendix with the entire text of the Yoga Sutras in the original Sanskrit and in a transliterated form, with a revised, literal English translation by the author.

Model Predictive Control (Advanced Textbooks in Control and Signal Processing)

Model Predictive Control (Advanced Textbooks in Control and Signal Processing)

From power plants to sugar refining, model predictive control (MPC) schemes have established themselves as the preferred control strategies for a wide variety of processes. The second edition of Model Predictive Control provides a thorough introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of the most commonly used MPC strategies. It bridges the gap between the powerful but often abstract techniques of control researchers and the more empirical approach of practitioners. Model Predictive Control demonstrates that a powerful technique does not always require complex control algorithms. The text features material on the following subjects: general MPC elements and algorithms; commercial MPC schemes; generalized predictive control multivariable, robust, constrained and nonlinear MPC; fast methods for MPC implementation; applications. All of the material is thoroughly updated for the second edition with the chapters on nonlinear MPC and MPC implementation being entirely new. Many new exercises and examples have also have also been added throughout and Matlab(r) programs to aid in their solution can be downloaded from the authors' website at XYZ.edu.es. The text is an excellent aid for graduate and advanced undergraduate students and will also be of use to researchers and industrial practitioners wishing to keep abreast of a fast-moving field.

Human Cognitive Neuropsychology: A Textbook With Readings

Human Cognitive Neuropsychology: A Textbook With Readings

This textbook augments the first edition through the inclusion of a set of reseach and review papers selected by the authors to supplement the contents of each chapter by providing a discussion of research issues and detailed investigation of individual cases. One or two papers supplement each chapter. A short introduction to each set makes clear the nature of their contribution and how they relate to each chapter's contents. Some of the papers are short reviews of theoretical contributions; others are case studies in the tradition of cognitive neuropsychology. At least three of the main trends discernible in cognitive neuropsychology in the 1990s are represented in the chosen papers. The first is the use of connectionist models to simulate patterns of impairment in brain-injured patients. The second is the growing convergence between cognitive neuropsychology and neuroscience: cognitive neuropsychologists are becoming increasingly interested in the brain processes that underlie the preserved and damaged psychological processes they study. The third trend is the involvement of cognitive neuropsychologists in work on therapy and rehabilitation.

The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders

The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders

Psychiatrists and other mental health care and medical professionals can now turn to a truly authoritative, up-to-date reference for current information about mood disorders. The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders—including a wealth of illustrations, tables and references—presents the state of the art in diagnosis, psychobiology, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy across the vast spectrum of mood disorders: Symptomatology and Epidemiology: Historical aspects and social underpinnings of mood disorders. Classification and rating scales. Global burden (the high costs of depression and bipolar disorder). Pathogenesis: Neurochemistry and psychoneuroendocrinology. Cognitive processing models (experimental cognitive research). Evolutionary explanations (the normal role of low mood in disengaging individuals from goals they cannot reach). Methods of Investigation: Anatomical pathology (strengths and limitations of human postmortem studies). Molecular and cellular neurobiology of severe mood disorders (abnormalities in the regulation of signaling). Genetics of bipolar and unipolar disorders. Types of Mood Disorder: Psychotic depression (distinct from nonpsychotic depression in presenting features, biology, familial transmission, course, and response to treatment). Seasonal affective disorder (use of light therapy in SADS and also in other depression). Secondary depression with medical illness (calling for large-scale studies to gauge treatment efficacy). Major depression seen in primary care (as prevalent as hypertension). Substance abuse (a long-standing source of controversy). Sleep disorders (risk factors for the new onset of depression). Treatments: Pharmacotherapy (including tricyclics and tetracyclics, MAOIs, SSRIs and newer antidepressants, lithium and other mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, hormonal interventions, and augmentation strategies). Brain stimulation techniques (such as ECT, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and vagus nerve and deep brain stimulation). Psychotherapies (cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and psychoanalytic/psychodynamic). Pertinent Factors: Personality (the need for further study of the degree and the etiologic nature of relationships between specific traits or disorders and major depression). Culture (suggesting a model of cultural consultation using multilingual, multicultural clinicians and culture brokers to supplement routine care). Gender (women being about twice as likely as men to have mood disorders) Age (pediatric and geriatric depression and suicidality). Offering a fascinating synthesis of the multifaceted field of mood disorders, the richly informative American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders will prove invaluable for psychiatric and medical practitioners, educators, students, and residents interested in the latest breakthroughs in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mood disorders.

The Textbook of the Universe: The Genetic Ascent to God

The Textbook of the Universe: The Genetic Ascent to God

This book describes a new theory of the origin and purpose of consciousness, and binds together all abstract thought in history into a coherent framework. Then it presents a model for explaining the binding problem via glial cells (and the physics of time), which necessarily interface with and affect neuron function. Further, and most importantly, a powerful new methodology for getting real useful information about consciousness is presented by using probabilities and the analysis of meaning. Many examples are presented from years of doing this new method.
